Krishna Chandra Dutta

In 1846, almost 10 years before the first war of Indian Independence – ‘The Sepoy Mutiny’, a young person in Bengal was set to create a revolution of a different kind. Krishna Chandra Dutta, a man with an in-depth knowledge of every Indian spice, its origin and its characteristic properties accomplished the task of making the best quality of whole spices available to his countrymen, especially to the Indian women who were the sole contributors to the culinary culture of India. At that time the women were the only driving force in any Indian household to experiment and improve the culinary art and win the hearts of the members of the household.

Krishna Chandra Dutta perceived the immense potential of quality spices as a serious business venture and started trading in spices around 1846 from Sutanuti in Bengal. He took pains in procuring the best spices only for his business as he wanted to sell only the best to the customers. His hard work, dedication and enthusiasm soon established him as a reputed spice trader in the area with a growing customer base spread across wide geographical areas.

Krishna Chandra Dutta’s business acumen and his knowledge about spices were passed down around 1890 to his son Natabar Dutta who maintained and built upon the reputation that his father had built so carefully.

After Natabar Dutta’s demise in 1918 the spice business of the Dutta family was inherited by his elder son Judhistir Dutta, who at the age of 9 supported by his uncles took charge of the helm of the business. Judhistir Dutta developed the concept of selling ground spice in pouches which he knew will catch on as it would make cooking less cumbersome for the women.

And in the year 1958, he took the bold step of starting a manufacturing unit in Kolkata to process and produce top quality ground spices. Thus the company Krishna Chandra Dutta (Spice) Pvt. Ltd was established in Bengal and the brand Cookme was conceived for the packed spices produced. Initially Cookme spices were sold in Bengal only, but later J D Marketing Pvt. Ltd was formed in 1993 and Cookme spices were marketed and distributed in many areas of the Indian market.
